Onam, Kerala’s traditional harvest festival celebrating the legendary homecoming of King Mahabali, extends far beyond India’s borders through the vibrant Malayali diaspora. Across major international hubs, community associations, cultural organisations, and local businesses organise elaborate gatherings that preserve traditional art forms, community feasts, and festive customs. The following overview highlights how Onam is celebrated in key global centres.

1. United Arab Emirates (UAE)

With more than a million Malayalis residing in the Emirates, the UAE hosts some of the largest Onam gatherings outside India. Celebrations span months and are concentrated in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi.

Major community events are organised by associations such as the Indian Association Sharjah, the India Social and Cultural Centre (ISC) in Abu Dhabi, and Dubai Kerala Samajam. These include cultural nights featuring Chenda Melam, Thiruvathirakali, and stage performances by Mollywood artists. Iconic dining destinations in areas such as Karama and Deira—among them Paragon, Calicut Notebook, and Grand Barbeque—prepare between 30,000 and 50,000 banana-leaf Sadyas during the Thiruvonam weekend. Retail groups such as LuLu organise record-breaking mega Pookkalam displays across their malls, supported by large-scale imports of fresh flowers from Kerala.

2. United Kingdom (UK)

The UK’s established Malayali community conducts extensive indoor and open-air Ponnonam celebrations in cities including London, Manchester, Birmingham, and East Ham.

The flagship MAUK Ponnonam, organised by the Malayalee Association of the UK (MAUK) in London, features grand home-cooked charity Onasadyas, traditional folk arts, and community recognition ceremonies. Regional groups such as the Croydon Malayalee Association, Manchester Malayalee Cultural Association, and Birmingham Malayalee Association arrange day-long festivities that include Uriyadi, Vadamvali (tug-of-war), and stage pageants. In high-density neighbourhoods such as East Ham and Wembley, local Kerala restaurants operate pre-booked banana-leaf Sadya services throughout August and September to meet strong demand.

3. United States (US)

In the United States, celebrations are coordinated by national umbrella bodies including FOKANA (Federation of Kerala Associations in North America) and FOMAA, together with active local city chapters.

In the Tri-State region (New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania), large convention-centre Onam gatherings feature traditional music, classical dances, youth pageants, and multi-course community feasts. In Texas, organisations such as the Kerala Catholic Society and Houston Malayalee Association host major banquets serving Sadyas of 25 or more dishes, often accompanied by Mahabali processions in Houston and Dallas. On the West Coast, the Bay Area Malayalee Association (BAMA) and groups in Seattle organise tech-corridor festivals that include Pookkalam contests, live Ganamela music concerts, and traditional games.

4. Canada

Canada’s Malayali communities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Vancouver, Calgary, and Ottawa present large-scale public cultural festivals that attract thousands of participants.

Maha Onam in Toronto, held at Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas Square) in the downtown core, is recognised as one of North America’s largest public Onam cultural events. It features street parades, dance flashmobs, food stalls, and music performances. The Kerala Association of Greater Toronto (KAGT) organises multi-thousand-seat Onasadya banquets, Maveli welcomes, and community awards. In Western Canada, the Vancouver Malayalee Association and Calgary Malayalee Association conduct community-hall feasts with live banana-leaf service, Thiruvathira dances, and youth cultural showcases.

Through these organised events and everyday community initiatives, the global Malayali diaspora maintains a strong cultural connection to Kerala while adapting Onam traditions to local contexts. Whether through grand public festivals, association-led banquets, or restaurant-hosted Sadyas, the spirit of unity, prosperity, and shared heritage continues to flourish across continents.
